Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of approach shafts leading to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," he said. "They were among a great many British troops stationed over the holidays. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "major assault" targeting IS targets in Syria, after an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
