Hurricane Melissa is forecast to escalate to a uncommon Category 5 cyclone as it veers toward Jamaica, delivering life-threatening rapid inundation and landslides.

The hurricane, which registered winds of up to 120 mph as of 0600 Greenwich Mean Time, is now shifting toward the northwest in the Caribbean Sea and is projected to hit the coast by Tuesday, according to weather experts.

Alerts of electricity outages and disruption to utilities have been issued as the hurricane produces up to thirty inches of precipitation and coastal flooding as high as 13ft above typical tides. "Find safe refuge immediately," residents have been advised.

This hurricane is the 13th named hurricane in the current Atlantic hurricane season, which usually concludes in the eleventh month.

Highest-Level Hurricane Threat

A highest-level storm is the most powerful category, with wind speeds of at least 157mph.

Although Melissa is projected to reduce in intensity to a Category 4 storm before making landfall on Jamaica, authorities said there was "very little practical difference in the total effects" upon landfall, and that the cyclone will be "equally strong" when it strikes the nation.

Urgent Safety Steps

With storm-force wind and rainfall predicted to begin well before it moves across central Jamaica - perhaps encompassing the national capital - advisories indicate that "safety measures need to be finalized quickly".

"A multi-day period of destructive gusts and intense precipitation have begun and will cause severe and deadly sudden floods and numerous mudslides," urged climate experts.

The country's head of government Andrew Holness stated: "I know that there are numerous residents who are worried, who are very concerned, and rightfully so: you should be concerned.

"However the best way to manage nervousness and any apprehension and anxiety is to stay ready."

Residents are being told to secure their homes with sandbags and plywood sheets, and to gather essentials.

Wider Impact

Warnings are also in effect for regions of Haiti such as the capital, Port au Prince, the Dominican Republic and eastern Cuba, where Melissa is projected to bring analogous consequences by the middle of next week.

Landslides currently triggered by the storm have resulted in two fatalities in the country, according to the nation's Civil Protection agency.

Expected Path

This weather system is projected to move across Cuba by midweek before traveling via the Greater Antilles and out into the Atlantic Ocean.

By the time it reaches the Caribbean nation, it is anticipated to have weakened to a Category 3 hurricane.

Climate Context

Although it is difficult to associate individual weather events to environmental shifts, scientists say it is causing climate patterns more prevalent and more intense.

Increased sea temperatures produce more moisture in the atmosphere, contributing to the development of tropical cyclones.

Prior to the beginning of this season's Caribbean cyclone season, meteorological authorities predicted above-normal activity, referencing heated marine conditions and possible enhanced seasonal rains around the western African continent - where hurricanes typically originate.
